Short Course on Advanced Impedance Matching
at the IEEE AP-S/USNC-URSI Conference

As part of the 2012 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation and USNC-URSI National Radio Science Meeting, July 8-14, 2012, in Chicago, IL, USA, Optenni will deliver a short course on "Advanced impedance matching and impedance analysis for antenna applications" on Sunday July 8. The main topics of the course are:

  • The traveling wave and power wave definitions of the reflection coefficient and the scattering matrix
  • Review of the Smith chart
  • Impedance matching using lumped (inductors and capacitors) and distributed components (transmission lines)
  • Analysis of the efficiency of matching circuits
  • Bandwidth potential calculations for estimating the obtainable impedance bandwidth and Q of nonresonant antennas
  • Obtainable efficiency bandwidth calculations for choosing a matching circuit topology for tunable matching circuits
  • Electromagnetic isolation calculations for calculating the worst-case isolation in two-antenna systems

Integrated Workflow Between FEKO and Optenni Lab

An integrated workflow between the FEKO 3D electromagnetic simulator and the Optenni Lab matching circuit optimization software has been developed.

After simulating the antenna impedance in FEKO, the S-parameters can be transferred using a Touchstone file to Optenni Lab, where matching circuits can be easily designed and optimized. The optimal matching circuit can be returned to FEKO as a two-port Touchstone file that can be used as a feeding network for further antenna simulations.
